Cheating in XCOM: Enemy Unknown?
Thanks to the incredible cheapness of Steam games (when purchased through 3rd party sites) I’ve just finished playing through XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
I have to say some of the end-game stats look a bit dubious to me:
- I scored 12,000 points while the world average was 144,000
- I had 120 scientists and the world average was 67,671
- I had 100 engineers and the world average was 103,810
OK, it’s obvious some players have gone beyond the occasional bit of cheating in XCOM by “loading a save file when a turn goes really bad”.
I have to wonder why they bother cheating. The game totals are anonymous, so all they are doing is throwing out the world average. Besides that, the game isn’t very difficult anyway.
The only other standout stat is the damager per shot which looks a little off. I had 6.8 and the world average was 20.68. I suppose you could get a higher average if you stocked up on heavies and just fired rockets at everything. I don’t know about getting it over 20 though.
My normal team was one mech, one sniper, one support, one assault and two heavies. Even with my “low” damage per shot, the second half of the game was quite easy. Most missions my guys would come back without a scratch.
Overall, I enjoyed the game, though it became repetitive towards the end. It’s also very linear with little replay value as demonstrated by the most of the global stats closely resembling mine.
There’s also a nasty bug in the game to watch out for. Occasionally a save file will become corrupted and no enemies will spawn when it is loaded. It happened to me on the last level, which meant that the game could not be completed. Luckily the game lets you restart if your entire team was killed, so I suicided everyone with rockets. I can imagine that this little bug would be infuriating if you happen to be playing with Iron-Man enabled though…
