Exoplanet Explorer Updated to 2.4.0
After a lot of work, I’ve finally been able to get a working build out of my old Shiva virtual machine.
This version should alleviate the problems people have been having with data downloads stalling because it includes all the data currently present on the server.
Please note that you’ll need to uninstall the app, then reinstall it. This is because the current data on your device can’t be overwritten, so the new app would still try to download the data and get stuck. Uninstalling will wipe the data file allowing the full database to be installed with V2.4.0.
It’s just been released to Google Play, so it’ll be a few hours before it will show up.
I’ve also released an updated build of the lite edition with 100 extra planets.
The next big update for the app will be the rewritten Unity version. I’ll be so glad to be rid of the Shiva codebase… it’s such a pain to work with.
Solar Explorer HD
The rewrite of Solar Explorer is ready for release. I’ll be aiming for the day after tomorrow to allow some time for final checks and optimisation.
I previously wrote that I was planning on creating a new app. Since then, I’ve changed my mind and I’m probably going to just replace the Lite version with Solar Explorer HD. My main concern with releasing an update, rather than a new app, is that it will annoy people who have devices that can’t run the new version well enough – it is a bit GPU heavy. Testing on my craptacular single core, 1GHz, 500MB tablet, it’s just useable at about 15 frames per second. It runs great on anything a bit faster though.
I’ve also had to drop support for Android 2.2. According to the app stats, only 0.5% of devices are still running a version that old.
Bear in mind that the at this stage the HD version is really just a graphically updated version of the old Shiva lite edition, with a bit more text. It’s doesn’t have all of the functions of the paid version of the app. Once the missing features have been completed, the paid version will be updated too. Until then, it’s going to look “worse” than the new Lite edition.
